“L.O.V.E.” - Bert Kaempfert
Branden Nguyen, guitar and vocals
This jazz standard is one of my go-to songs to sing. I am not an avid vocalist, but I gravitate towards certain songs when I do sing. The simplicity of the lyrics and the catchiness of the melody makes “L.O.V.E” a staple in my vocal repertoire. I have many fond memories of playing this song over the past few years. Of all the different collaborations, my favorite is a video of this song I recorded with my friend Danielle Mendoza. That video is currently on my channel. Though it was not the first jazz song I learned to sing, I thought it would be a solid choice to start my vocal series. Over time, I hope to improve my singing and performance ability in this series.
NAT KING COLE’S CLASSIC RECORDING
About this video: This was not the first choice. I actually chose a different song to start the Vocal Series. I found myself having difficulty with the lyrics, so the end result was to change the song selection to “L.O.V.E.” I think I made the right choice. The video was tricky to record. During the shoot, planes kept flying overhead. I tried to fit a take in the intervals between plane landings, and it was really exhausting. In addition, it was rather windy, and the shoot did not take place in a controlled environment. The sound quality is not the optimal, but I think it will do for a first effort. Audio will be something I focus on in the next video. I chose this particular filter and effect to highlight the vintage feel I was going for. Despite the conditions, the video turned out acceptable and I am proud that it is my first one in this series.
